Music

Accommodation and Equipment
Housed in the Expressive Arts Building and consisting of 2 purpose built music rooms and 1 separate practice room. Both music rooms are fully equipped with keyboards (full sized keys), Clavinovas, classroom instruments and sound equipment, etc.

Instrumental Tuition
The school provides high quality weekly Instrumental tuition on Woodwind, Brass, Strings, Guitars and Drums and also Singing tuition. All lessons are free and lessons are usually 25/30 minutes each. Our pupils have gained excellent results in Associated Board Music Examinations which they are always able to enter throughout the school year. Instrumentalists are also coached individually for this.

Extra Curricular Activities
Many varied extra curricular activities occur throughout the year. These include our Swing Choir (which has performed at Blackpool’s Opera House and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall), our Samba Band, Instrumental groups on Woodwind and Brass Instruments, our School Wind Band and four Rock Bands. There is also a weekly keyboard club which meet at lunchtimes. We also produce high quality sell-out music concerts during the school year!

The Annual School Production
The Music and Drama Department produce a full scale musical production every year. The show is always a sell-out and is performed over 3 nights at Easter. Our last production was the musical “Little Shop of Horrors”. Many students are involved each year with our musical productions.

Key Stage 4

GCSE music is offered to all pupils who wish to take this option. The AQA specification is used at present. The course components are Listening & Appraising, Performing (1 Solo and 1 Ensemble performance per pupil) and Composing. Students are required to produce an Integrated Assignment as part of the course. Compositions are submitted to the exam board on CD.
